Tiles History in Nigeria
Brief History
Tiles production is not new in Nigeria. As far back as 1950's we have the version of tiles known as Terrazzo floor tiles. Terrazzo was a mixture of tar and concrete with another chemical that makes it look smooth and smart. It was truly a beauty to behold. It replaced what we used to know as German floor (ordinary floor plastered with mixed cement and sand). However, terrazzo is strictly for the wealthy, you hardly see it in an average man's house.
However, in the late 1960's, Nigerians began to import foriegn CERAMIC AND PORCELAIN TILES from countries like Spain, Italy, India, Germany, UAE, China and Turkey. These are quality tiles of numerous sizes and colors. It gradually replaced Terrazzo due to its numerous advantages like: it is easy to fix, swift to clean and then it is relatively affordable. But in the early 1990's, Nigeria witnessed the manufacturing of tiles in our motherland by the introduction of ceramic companies.
A contemporary progress
As at today, Nigeria has about 10 tiles manufacturing plants situated in various cities such as Lagos, Sagamu in Ogun State, Ajaokuta in Kogi State, Ezeagu in Enugu State among others.
